The inaugural lecture will pay homage to the iconic poet, author, and orator Dr Donato Francesco Mattera, commonly referred to as “Bra Don.” The theme of the lecture is THE CHILD– in 2030, “Creating a sustainable, conducive FUTURE ENVIRONMENT for the CHILD”. The auspicious occasion will be launched in partnership with the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) with a special live broadcast of linked to the Westbury Community Hall, a community Bra Don stems from.
Chairperson of the Don Mattera Legacy Foundation Ms. Jenny Jeftha, says, “The Foundation has made considerable headway to host the inaugural Don Mattera Annual Lecture, originally planned for 24th September 2021, but due to COVID-19 and the lockdown regulations, we took a decision to host the lecture this year. Finally, we are ready. The significance of the live broadcast link to the Westbury Community Hall is to showcase the place where Don Mattera was raised and his relationship with people of Westbury”.
High-profile speakers will grace the inaugural lecture such as internationally renowned education expert Professor Jonathan Jansen, who will deliver the keynote address, celebrated journalist and newspaper editor Ferial Haffajee as the moderator and an esteemed discussion panel comprising of child rights activist Dr Shaheeda Omar, poet and sculptor Professor Pitika Ntuli as well Dr Tahir Sitoto an academic, Lecturer in the School of Religion, Philosophy and Classics at the University of KwaZulu-Natal who wrote a thesis about Dr Don Mattera titled - On Africana/Islamica Existential Thought: Don Mattera and the Question of Transcendence.
Jeftha concluded, “The Don Mattera Legacy Foundation is thrilled that the annual lecture date is now set, and we are prepared to make it a memorable event. More information will be made available in the coming weeks in the runup to 26th March 2022”.
