The Don Mattera Legacy Foundation has paid tribute to the late renowned human rights lawyer George Bizos.
The patron of the Foundation Dr “Don” Mattera personally extended his condolences to the family and friends of George Bizos.
Dr Teddy Mattera, son of the legendary poet and a board member of the Don Mattera Legacy Foundation says, “It is sad news indeed for South Africa to have lost a dedicated human right defender and one of the architects of South Africa's constitution”.
Ninety-two-year-old Bizos died at his home in Johannesburg on Wednesday 9/09/2020 after a period of poor health. He was part of the legal teams of the Treason and Rivonia trials in 1956 and 1964 respectively, that defended the rights of activists including Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki and Walter Sisulu, against apartheid.
Mattera concluded, “As South Africa we should not forget the immense contribution of the veteran human rights lawyer, George Bizos”.
