On the 21st March 2021, The National Writers Association of South Africa (NWASA) awarded the Grand Patron of the Arts Award to Dr Donato Francisco Mattera commonly known as Don Mattera or “Bra Zinga”.
This honor is reserved for people who are considered a fountain of knowledge and information in their spheres of expertise.
The Secretary General of NWASA, Dr Lebogang Nawa says, “The award for the Grand Patron of the Arts Award is bestowed on individuals like Dr Don Mattera who embody and display extraordinary or exceptional qualities of being pioneers, trailblazers, visionaries, versatile leaders, and cross-over practitioners in the arts and culture sphere. These are cultural practitioners who muster - against all odds - the courage, bravery and foresight to challenge conventions, break new grounds and open new cultural avenues of vistas and Don Mattera embodies all of these attributes”.
Dr Don Mattera said, “I am honored by the gesture from The National Writers Association of South Africa (NWASA) to award me the Grand Patron of the Arts award. As the Don Mattera Legacy Foundation, we endorse the sterling work that NWASA is doing to ensure that deserving writers and authors are honored for the exceptional literary work that they produce”.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions Dr Don Mattera son Dr Teddy Mattera, recorded the acceptance speech on behalf of his father through video link.
NWASA have awarded four categories of the awards be bestowed on the night of the 21st March. The Grand Patron of the Arts Award, Life-time Achievement Award, Rising Star Award and the President’s Choice Award.
